LONDON – 9am GMT, 26 January 2022 – Today, WorldGBC announces four new companies as signatories to its Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment (the Commitment), signalling global industry leadership to decarbonise the built environment and combat climate change.
The Commitment now has a total of 160 signatories, with 126 businesses and organisations, 28 cities, and 6 states and regions. The businesses and organisations signed up to the Commitment account for approximately 6.5 million (tCO2e) of portfolio emissions annually and more than $300 billion annual turnover, and are already taking significant steps to decarbonise their portfolio operations.
Building on the success of ‘Cities, Regions and Built Environment Day’ hosted at COP26 last year, companies are continuing to step up and take industry leading climate action.
The built environment has a history of fragmentation and complex supply chains, meaning that it has often been overlooked in the climate discourse.
This year’s COP26 saw a historic moment for the building and construction sector through a dedicated ‘Cities, Regions and Built Environment Day’ taking place on 11 November 2021.
This is only the second time that the built environment has been acknowledged as a critical climate solutions provider at COP – the first being a dedicated ‘Buildings Day’ at COP21 in Paris 6 years ago.As a sector which is accountable for almost 40% of global energy-related carbon emissions, it is alarming that the built environment has remained a blind spot in climate negotiations for so long.

After a multi-year global consultation, the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) developed a revolutionary Health and Wellbeing Framework, which outlines six key principles for the building and construction industry to develop a healthy, equitable built environment for everyone, everywhere.
Now, WorldGBC has released an Implementation Guide - a step by step educational tool which will show the sector how to embed the principles of Health, Wellbeing and Social Value throughout the entire lifecycle of the built environment.

World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) defines Prospective Green Building Council (GBC) membership as bringing together key representatives from different parts of the building sector within a country and creating a founding group, who will initially lead the design and implementation of the GBC’s governance and business plan.
